Why we wrote How to Run a Children’s Home

Most people who want to open a children’s home start with the right motive. They have worked with children in care, or seen what happens when a placement breaks down, and they believe they can do better. Too often, that motive meets a registration process they do not understand until it is too late. We wrote this course on How to run a children’s home because we kept seeing the same pattern.

How to Run a Children’s Home online course by Elevate Care Insights and Solid Bond ConsultingThe pattern we kept seeing

Applicants buy a set of policies, adapt a Statement of Purpose they found online, and submit their SC1. On paper, the application looks complete. Then the Fit Person interview arrives, and the questions are not about the documents. They are about the people.

Can the Registered Manager explain how the home will keep a particular child safe at night? Does the Responsible Individual know what good care looks like, and how they would know if it was slipping? Has anyone thought about whether the location is right for the children the home plans to care for?

A template cannot answer those questions. Only understanding can.

Why we do not sell templates

We made a deliberate choice. This course does not hand you a Statement of Purpose to fill in or a policy pack to rename. Instead, it gives you guides, checklists and worked examples, so you write documents that describe your home, your children and your practice.

That takes longer. It is also the only approach that holds up when an inspector asks you to talk them through what you have written.

Built from both sides of the process

The course was written by a registered social worker with over 35 years’ experience across Ofsted and CQC-regulated services, including setting up and managing regulated provision. It is strengthened by Top Tips videos from a former Ofsted inspector, who explains what the inspection side is actually looking for. We know how to run a children’s home because of our experience and from working with many providers and crucially children themselves.

That combination matters. One perspective tells you how to build a home that works. The other tells you how that home will be judged. You need both.

What the course covers

Across nine modules, the course takes you from first idea to inspection readiness:

• The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the nine Quality Standards

• The SC1 application and what sits behind it

• Preparing for Fit Person interviews as a Registered Manager or Responsible Individual

• Location assessment, commissioning and how placements are made

• Governance, staffing and safer recruitment

• Care planning and the theory behind good practice, including PACE and trauma-informed care

• Preparing for your registration visit and your first inspection

Each module ends with a knowledge check, and you keep the downloadable resources.
